A bright yellow payphone on Boston University’s Commonwealth Avenue is doing more than turning heads — it’s connecting college students with senior living residents 3,000 miles away in Reno. The “Call a Boomer” project, run by Matter Neuroscience, links younger and older adults for short, meaningful conversations to combat loneliness among older adults and foster intergenerational connection.
For many seniors — especially those who are single, widowed, or living in long-term care — simple human contact can improve emotional wellbeing and reduce isolation. Residents at the Reno community, most aged 62 and up, have enjoyed hearing new voices and sharing stories that brighten their day. The project exemplifies how community-based initiatives and social programs can support seniors’ mental health and social needs.
As a local senior home care agency, we value creative approaches that improve quality of life for older adults. Whether through in-home care, companionship services, or community activities, helping seniors stay connected is central to what we do. Share this feel-good story with neighbors and friends— it’s a reminder that small acts of connection can make a big difference.
