Sniff Out Dementia with Scent Test ?
Its great that they are discovering more ways to detect dementia which we will all benefit from. Remember to take your coconut oil and other nutrients if you think your sense of smell is fading.
Sniff out dementia with this simple 12-second scent test by Jack Harrison, Daily Dose, 12/5/15
You’d like to keep all your senses. But if you had to lose one, chances are you’d go with smell. Heck, with the odor of election year BS floating all around, you might not even miss it at first.
But it turns out the nose knows a whole lot more than you might think — because new research reveals when you start to lose your sense of smell, you could be losing something far more important with it: Your mind!
Yes, my friend, when your nose goes… so goes your brain, as the latest research links a fading sense of smell to fading memory and even dementia risk.
Seniors in this new study were given a sniff test involving six foods (banana, chocolate, cinnamon, lemon, onion and pineapple) and six non-foods (gasoline, paint thinner, rose, soap, smoke and turpentine) and then tracked for an average of 3.5 years.
Those who had no signs of memory loss but stunk on the sniff test were 2.2 times more likely to develop memory problems over the following years. And those who were already starting to lose it upstairs were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s when they flunked the smell test, according to the study of 1,400 seniors.
The medical industry has wasted billions trying to cook up a test to spot dementia before it sinks in, and they’ve come up emptier than a campaign promise.
Yet this simple test that anyone could do — one you could set up easily enough with stuff you have around at home — just might be the key to figuring out who’s at risk.
That test could be even simpler, too: Other studies show that if you start to lose the ability to smell peanut butter, you could be at risk for dementia.
If your own sense of smell is fading, it doesn’t mean dementia is right around the corner. But it DOES mean you should sniff out some brain-saving nutrients so you can help make sure it never happens.
Start with essential B vitamins, which can help stop the shrink of gray matter that’s known to speed cognitive decline. They’re so effective that studies have found seniors given a B complex did 70 percent better on memory tests than seniors given a placebo.
A Christmas Poem
I have a really praiseworthy story of how God works in mysterious ways. I’m still in awe. I was wondering over the weekend what to write in this section that would be meaningful for the holiday season. So, I get a text from a caregiver on Sunday afternoon asking me to bring some timesheets to our interview on Monday. Why would he need a time sheet for an interview? Did not make sense to me. It was only an interview. But then I realized I forgot to pick up some new copies of the time sheets that I had printed a couple days prior. So I get to the store and a nice well dressed lady was standing in front of me getting copies made of a poem. The employee of OfficeMax told her it was a nice poem and she mentioned that it was written by her 98 yr. old mother that writes a new poem every Christmas. Wow! I thought to myself. That could go in my newsletter and website since it was written by a senior and it relates to the reason for the season. She gladly gave me a copy and now I get to share it with you. Praise God for the timing of how I got the poem. God really did provide this meaningful message for you.
It’s Christmas!
Christmas brought the Christ to earth. To a world of sin and woe. Where man did strive but could not earn. The Gift God’s Love did bestow! Praise God for the Good News. That man can seek Him still. Can seek, as in days of old, His forgiveness and His will!
O Blessed Christmas,

Lavender Can Decrease Senior Anxiety as Much as Dangerous Prescription Drugs?
Common knowledge (and scientific investigation) tells us that the smell of lavender oil, distilled from lavender flowers, has calming properties. Simply smelling lavender oil can decrease anxiety as measured by the Hamilton rating scale, a psychological questionnaire used by doctors to gauge the severity of a person’s anxiety
But what happens if you take lavender oil in capsule form? You may be surprised at the rather astonishing answer!
The Nose Knows
Until quite recently, research on lavender’s soothing effects concentrated on its smell. This research did demonstrate that lavender has a calming effect, but it’s not easy to conduct double-blind studies with odors. That limitation made it difficult to draw firm conclusions about lavender as a treatment for anxiety.
Then some enterprising researchers decided to try administering lavender orally. When they gave patients capsules of lavender-infused oil, the results were truly remarkable. In a double-blind study comparing lavender oil to popular anti-anxiety drug Ativan (lorazepam), lavender reduced anxiety more effectively than the drug!
When Medication Makes You Unable to Function
The most commonly prescribed treatments for anxiety in the mainstream medical world are Ativan and other benzodiazepines or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Benzodiazepines, sometimes called “benzos” for short, may alleviate anxiety but often leave users feeling hung over. Well-known side effects of benzodiazepines include…
Drowsiness
Fatigue
Confusion
Disorientation
Dizziness
Impaired concentration
Faulty memory
Dry mouth
Vision problems
Benzodiazepines can interfere with your ability to drive or operate machine as well as to carry out everyday tasks. They also lower the body’s tolerance for alcohol, and have a high potential for abuse and addiction.
SSRIs do not have the same addictive potential, but do come with their own long list of unpleasant side effects. The negative outcomes associated with these two popular treatment options may be why anxiety is considered an undertreated condition.
A Gentle and More Effective Option
When researchers compared lavender oil and Ativan, they found that lavender worked better! Lead authors Woelk and Schlaefke conducted a multicenter, double-blind randomized study comparing lavender oil capsules and Ativan. At the end of the six-week trial, both groups experienced similar drops in anxiety levels as measure by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), but the group taking lavender actually experienced a slightly more substantial decrease.
During the trial, additional tools were used to measure anxiety levels, such as…
The HAM-A “somatic anxiety” subscore
The HAM-A “psychic anxiety” subscore
The Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS)
The Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ-PW)
The SF 36 Health Survey Questionnaire
The Clinical Global Impressions of Severity of Disorder (CGI)
Participants also kept sleep diaries. All in all, the measures indicated the lavender had just as serious a positive effect on anxiety as Ativan.
Unlike Ativan, other benzodiazepines, and SSRIs, lavender oils have no potential for drug abuse, and causes no “hangovers” or other undesirable effects. So far scientists have given it a green light as an anxiety treatment.

Aromatherapy can help reduce falls in the elderly, study shows
“Nursing home residents who continuously wore a lavender-scented aromatherapy patch were less likely to fall in a recent study from Japan. The aroma was so faint that only the person wearing the patch could sense it. A fresh patch was affixed to the person’s clothing near the neck every day for a year.
Lavender essential oil is used in aromatherapy to ease anxiety and nervousness, and it has been shown to improve balance in older adults. Participants in this study had a significant decrease in agitation during the course of the trial, which may have contributed to the reduced rate of falls”

3 Life Lessons You Can Learn By Riding a Bike
A few weeks ago my youngest daughter, Alaina, learned to ride a big-girl 2-wheeler, no training wheels bicycle! As I watched her experience the joy of the wind in her hair and pride of pedaling for the first time, a few life lessons occurred to me. I thought I’d share those with you.
When the road throws you a curve, go with it! When a turn is coming up, you have to lean with the curve so you stay on course. You can’t fight it and go the other way or you’ll fall off. Life sometimes throws you curves too, and in order to remain on top, you need to go with the flow. If a tragedy happens… accept its pain, and go with God’s larger plan which is for the ultimate good!
A bike doesn’t move on its own. Life and bicycles need people to operate them. Without a person behind the handlebars, guiding and making choices, it just won’t go anywhere. Life is the same. Making no choice, is really the same as making your choice; do so mindfully and thoughtfully.
You can’t do it forever. Some people wish they could live forever. Some people even act as if they just might. But just like riding a bike, your body eventually wears out, and you need to go home. The important thing is that you enjoy the ride while you’re experiencing it, have fun, and be grateful for the ride.
If you know someone who’s body is ready for a rest, but wants to rest at their own home before going to their final home with God in heaven, Safe at Home Healthcare can help.
4 DIY Home Tips That Grandma Used
Grandma likely used every one of these, how about you?
#1 Soak Greasy Tools in Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola might not be good for your waste or teeth but it sure is good for cleaning tools and sticky surfaces. Since the late 1800s, when cola was invented mechanics have been using it as a cleaner for their tools and for mechanical items. New Jersey textile designer William H. Carroll’s says “Soak in Coke!” When tools or mechanical items get all plugged up with oil and grease, just soak them overnight in a Coca-Cola bath and it will cut the grease and make them shine. Coca-Cola costs less than water so there’s no expense here.
#2 Freshen Up a Room Using Coffee Grinds
A house that has a fireplace that hasn’t been used for some time can start to have a sooty odor from drafts circulating through the house. The 1914 Old Farmer’s Almanac suggests using coffee grinds to freshen the air: Crumple old newspapers, put them in the fireplace, and sprinkle ground coffee on top of the newspapers. Light the fire and let it burn. The coffee scent will over power the soot smell.
#3 Non-toxic Cleaner: Baking Soda and Murphy Oil Soap
This is a very effective bathroom cleaner recipe that’s natural. All you need is baking soda and Murphy Oil Soap, a biodegradable, phosphate-free vegetable oil soap invented way back 1905. Sprinkle baking soda on your porcelain bathroom fixtures and then rub with a wet rag. Add a little bit of Murphy Oil Soap to your rag and keep rubbing. Then rinse well. For the toilet, sprinkle baking soda inside the bowl followed by Murphy Oil Soap. Then scrub with a toilet brush.
#4 Save the Cooking Water
When you prepare pasta, corn on the cob, potatoes, or vegetables, don’t pour the hot water down the drain. Save the water and when it has cooled dump it directly onto a thirsty plants.
Good Idea: Smart911.com
I believe that everybody should have a Smart911.com safety profile for their home. Especially Seniors who live alone. Smart911 replaces the Vial of Life that has been around for many years. The vial of life is a brief information sheet including current medications, allergies, doctor’s names next of kin etc. which is put in a vial and then placed inside the refrigerator freezer. Then a magnet or sticker is placed on the front door to alert the EMS personnel that vital information is located in the freezer.
Now there is something better.
Smart911 is a free service used by public safety agencies across the country to enhance communication and response for their community. It can be used by
9-1-1 agencies to quickly send first responders to the location of an emergency with more information, by emergency management to better plan for and
respond to disasters, and by municipalities to send emergency notifications to their citizens.
By creating a Safety Profile for your family, you are providing potentially life-saving information to public safety officials at the time when they need it most. On the way to your home.
Why should you get Smart911 ?
Today over 70% of calls made to 9-1-1 in the U.S. are made from mobile phones, and these mobile phones relay limited information about the caller.
Unlike a landline, a mobile phone does not link directly to an address or include a caller’s name. 9-1-1 call takers are trained to ask specific questions to determine the location of the emergency, who is
in need of assistance and other specific details in order to send the correct response teams, to the correct location, quickly. These questions take time, and often during an emergency the caller may not be able to communicate effectively.
If you have a Smart911 profile the call taker will have all the information they need to help you quickly.
Check out Smart911.com and see if it is available in your area. If not, put in a request and tell all your friends about this life saving service.
